History

The barbershop style of singing originated in North America in the late 1800s. Since then, it has grown into a favorite pastime worldwide.

Founded in 1959, Harmony, Inc. currently has over 65 chapters and over 2,000 members. In keeping with the organization’s motto, “A Blend with Friendship,” many Harmony members develop lifelong friendships that span generations and know no geographic boundaries.

Harmony members take pride in their democratic principles, applied to both chapter and international governance structures. Governed by an elected Board of Directors, Harmony, Inc. is divided into six geographical areas within the United States and Canada, with chapters stretching from Manitoba to Florida and Newfoundland to California.

In the Community

Harmony, Inc. choruses and quartets share their love of singing with the community through performances for all audiences. Harmony, Inc. members also perform at churches, schools, hospitals, and senior centers and contribute to charitable projects on a local and national basis. You can also find many Harmony, Inc. groups on social media!

Conventions and Contests

One of the advantages (and thrills!) of being a Harmony member is the opportunity to participate in musical activities on a broader scale. Conventions are held each year to educating members, bring everyone together to see the best perform, and to encourage an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie.

Harmony, Inc. sponsors area chorus and quartet contests each spring. Scores garnered at area contests qualify contestants to compete at the International Convention & Contests in November. These are thrilling events, whether competing with a chorus or quartet, watching the contests to learn, or just visiting.

Educational Programs

Vocal training, through being a Harmony chorus member, provides a fun way to develop and improve as a singer. Training is also available for new and experienced directors, plus those interested in entering the judging program and becoming certified to judge at contests.

Area Education Days provide instruction and coaching on all facets of barbershop performance.

Area and International Conventions offer a broader range of disciplines, including singing, presentation, arranging, and chapter administration.

Alternate Membership Options

Associate Memberships are available for those who, for whatever reasons, are unable to participate actively in a chapter. Full membership rights and privileges are included.

Affiliate Memberships are available to men who wish to be affiliated with Harmony, Inc. Privileges include most benefits of regular membership, with the exception of the rights to vote, hold office, and compete as a singer.
